Sit down at the table, there's always room for one more. While you're sitting here, let's talk.
Food
I have included my six weeks of menus for you. Just click on the word MENU, and it will take you there.
To create the menus, we sat down as a family. I with my pen in hand, and notebook. I then asked them to start giving me things they like for breakfast. I made a master list of those. We did this also with lunch and dinner. Then I simply created a six week menu for us.
Food Myths
White bread is a good source of fiber. NOT! We call white bread a "negative food source". It doesn't do a thing for you.
A good breakfast means, sweetened cereal because it is loaded with vitamins, and your kids will eat it. NOT! Once again, a "negative food source". Besides the high cost, cereal is one of the "worst" foods you can feed your body first thing in the morning. How do I know? Am I an expert? I am not a nutrition expert, I have simply observed my children. When they are given sugar laden cereals for breakfast they are hungry within an hour or two.
A laboratory test was done with rats. One controlled group was fed sugar coated cereal, the other group was given the box. Which group do you think fared better? The rats who ate the box were healthier than the ones who ate the cereal. Why is this? Because essentially the rats who ate the box were fasting.
Each box of cereal states that the cereal is part of a balanced breakfast including juice, toast, milk, and fruit. Guess what? The best breakfast doesn't include the cereal. Give the kids some good home made whole wheat bread and you have some healthy kids.
We began grinding our own wheat, and making our own bread just a little over a year ago. In our family we have noticed a marked decrease in illnesses. The most remarkable thing is that if one child does get an illness, he doesn't seem to pass it on to the rest of the children. I firmly believe, adding freshly ground, whole wheat bread to our diet has built up the immune systems in all of my children.
Making granola is a pain. Not true. Follow this simple recipe and you have a quick, easy, delicious, and nutritious, breakfast cereal. We call it HORSEMASH.
1/2 cup oil
1/2 cup honey
8 cups old fashioned oats
anything else you want to add. ie. raisins, nuts, sunflower seeds, coconut, etc.
In a skillet, heat the oil and honey until bubbly. Add the remaining ingredients and cook just a little longer, until the oats are a tad brown. That's it. That's all there is to it. My eleven year old daughter has been making this for breakfast for the past two years.
Hot dogs are a great food for kids NOT! Again, Negative food source. I know, it's unAmerican to not eat hotdogs. Besides, what are we supposed to roast over a campfire? I like hotdogs. I like giving my kids hotdogs. But they are still a negative food source. If we must feed our kids hotdogs, let's at least serve it with freshly ground whole wheat buns!
We like to eat healthy foods, but we also will splurge now and then. I cannot vouch for the recipes in the recipe of the day, but I thought it would be a fun addition to my website. So, come back often and see what the new recipe is. ~
